A lot like the early Zeppelin-great unsung bandNovember 8, 2007 Paul Hector(Denver, CO USA) Jeff Beck was the best guitar player to come out of England in the 60's, period. Clapton and Page were more successful, but I think Beck's lead style was more original and outside the blues box. Unfortunately he never stayed with a band or developed originals that were anything other than a showcase for his virtuosity.
The Jeff Beck band was in many ways equal or better to the early Zep (they both played covers although Zep claimed there's were originals.) The JB group had the pre-disco Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronny Wood on Bass (who went on to play lead guitar for the Stones and Stewart), and Mick Waller on drums. John Paul Jones even steps in on the Hammond Organ for a few tunes, it feels and sounds a lot like Zep! Truth is a great album of mostly covers but the guitar work and the busy lead bass are memorable. This is a piece of lost history and a band that could hold there own with anyone during their time. I still play Shapes of Things and Beck's Bolero sometimes on my guitar when I know nobody can hear me noodling-it's the ultimate guitar hero ego jam music!
