Simon's Nurturing "Into White"January 6, 2007 T. Yap(Sydney, NSW, Australia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Prime Cuts: Into White, Quiet Evening, Love of My Life
A fine line separates a true artist from a drudge. While many a lesser singer may put together a standards CD with the least amount of imagination and obvious song selections, Simon shows that she can get into the skin of each note of these uniquely chosen canon of lullabies and packs them with sinews of vitality and creativity. Few singers, for instance, can make children's choruses such as "Oh! Susanna" palpable with such nurturing warmth as Simon can. Further, the choice of material on this disc is by no means predictable. From the throwback folk-like ambiance of James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" to Judy Garland's majestically celestial "Somewhere over the Rainbow" to Cat Stevens' spiritually tranquil title cut, Simon and co-producer Jimmy Parr have weaved together a inimitable sonic tapestry held together by an understated and spacious backing. Moreover, to prove how towering Simon's songwriting prowess is, Simon has included her composition "Love of My Life," which ranks shoulder to shoulder with these chestnuts.
To bill this disc as a mere lullaby CD is a caricature. Regardless of whether sung to a child or a paramour, the gorgeous pledge of love as expressed in the ballad "Devoted to You" will be enough to move the hardest of hearts. Made even more poignant coming from Simon's own pen, "Love of My Life" is a thoughtful celebration of the miracle of birth from a maternal perspective. While "Somewhere over the Rainbow" may not be transparently in accord with the album's thematic tenor, it's optimistic thrust and Simon's subdued delivery bring a childlike beauty to this Garland classic. On the other hand, the Beatles' "Blackbird" gets a complete makeover with its billowing strings and tilting steel guitars.
As Simon has a burgeoning legion of fans across the smooth jazz divide, "Quiet Evening," a luscious ballad delivered at a languid pace, ought to rival Diana Krall at her best. To make the family-theme even more complete, Simon segue son and daughter Ben and Sally Taylor into a family sing-along to ex-husband James Taylor's classic "You Can Close Your Eyes." However, if there are any quibbles, it has to be that such propulsive moments are far and in between. Though there are virtually no complains as far as Simon's interpretive skills as a balladeer are concerned, the CD suffers from too many slower tempo tracks. This makes listening to the entire disc on one sitting tedious and if children are to be part of this album's target-audience this may not be captivating enough.
Nevertheless, "Into White" takes on familiar tuff and makes them verdant again. Further, thanks to Simon and Parr, the cynosure of this project is still on Simon's alto. Never has she sounded more confident, and yet in every vocal nuance she simmers with an affecting verve that can only come from a mother who feels deeply about these songs. Her love for the young certainly makes this new effort glow with that maternal fondness that is simply hard to resist.
