4 out of 5 stars Classic organ combo   November 13, 2007
Avid (Chicago IL)
This is a very nice, big recording by an excellent trio - straight ahead organ jazz - though its DeVos' gig. DeVos is not a pyrotechnics guy, but he is tasteful, makes every note count and has a beautiful sound. The remainder of the trio is solid, if unspectacular. I would have liked to have heard more Eric Alexander - he appears on 3 tracks and his playing elevates the band, in my opinion. 'Track and Field' is a high point, with Alexander soaring over Kostelnik's Hammond and DeVos taking his most fluid solo - conjuring up Pat Martino. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Just fantastic!   April 25, 2007

This album is one of my favorite purchases in recent memory. I had never heard of Bob DeVos before running across his name by chance while doing some Web research on guitar equipment. It turns out he's been running with high profile jazz players in the NYC area for years, notably with the late Charles Earland for a long stint. Those credentials alone suggest he's got a lot going on, and let me tell you, he definitely delivers on this release.

The opening number, Lost and Found, is a medium tempo, straight eighth bluesy piece: very much that urban jazz-organ feel. The tunedemonstrates DeVos' deep grounding in, and feel for, the blues. The organ really makes this tune in terms of getting that urban sound and that feeling of slow-burn intensity. DeVos' choice of chords for the melody here encompass mainstream sounds harking back to the sixties jazz organ trio sounds but also more modern, angular chords. It's a great opener, setting the pace and making you want to listen to what else is in store.

The title cut shows off DeVos' gift for composition, starting out with an intro whose chord changes begin by sending you in a gospel direction only to veer sharply toward a deeper level of harmonic sensibility - all in the first few bars of the tune. After setting down a further, short chord vamp, the 3/4 meter melody comes in and you know immediately that he's drawing from his blues well. The short bridge section goes in yet a different direction, then pulls back into the original melody briefly by use of the intro vamp. It's a very satisfying composition.

The other songs on the date are similarly well crafted and executed. The standards in particular show DeVos has been around long enough to know how to make a familiar tune his own. Eric Alexander is of course a great addition, playing on a number of cuts.

His playing overall has a very New York, organ trio sound, similar in some respects to Peter Bernstein but more intense and driving in terms of his soloing (and I don't mean faster or with more notes, either). I am reminded at times as well of the other great Canadian guitarist, Peter Leitch.

I highly recommend this recording (I haven't bought anything else from him - yet!), especially if you're looking to hear a different voice on the guitar from the usual suspects.

5 out of 5 stars A CD recording not to be missed in 2006/2007   January 21, 2007

I saw this CD on a NY metro Top Ten CD's list for 2006 and boy did they get that right! A combination of great overall playing and fantastic tunes, especially DeVos' originals - great guitar tone, really fat and warm. A must for jazz guitar fans and lovers of the modern guitar-Hammond organ-drums genre. Eric Alexander,on tenor sax, delivers a five star performance, as well. A super recording, not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars A Burning CD! WOW!   November 29, 2006

Bob DeVos is my guitar hero and this CD is terrific: All the DeVos signatures are lushly displayed: a gorgeous sound, incredible blues feel and wow, does he swing. You can tell he is playing with his working band and long-time associate Eric Alexander; there is great interplay among all the artists and the sounds mesh fantastically, especially on the title track, a rich gospel-sounding groove, written by DeVos. The CD starts out with a great funk tune, and builds from there. Great DeVos arrangements. This CD has it all: wit, groove, and it just compels you along to the last note. I've worn out Breaking the Ice--DeVos' first Savant CD with the great Charles Earland-- and it looks like I am going to do the same with this new offering. Don't miss this one!
