Amazon.com Fresh off his Broadway stint in The Pajama Game, Harry Connick went back to his New Orleans roots and recorded a pair of albums in tribute to his hometown. Released the same day as the similarly themed but mostly instrumental Chanson du Vieux Carre, Oh, My Nola is a loose, effortlessly swinging album that ranks among Connick's best. He traces New Orleans' prodigious musical legacy with well-chosen covers peppered with some originals. Though he wrote only four tracks, at least one of them, "All These People," is a stand-out--a mid-tempo elegy about the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with a strong contribution from gospel great Kim Burrell. When it comes to the covers, Connick chose tracks that either originated in New Orleans or found particular resonance there. The funky, exuberant take on Allen Toussaint's classic "Working in a Coal Mine" that opens the CD reflects the flavor of things to come, but even more fun are the seemingly left-field picks--you'll never think of "Hello Dolly" the same way after listening to the version found here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great Surprise! September 24, 2007 Adam Canion (Tyler, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't think I was going to like this CD as much as I do! It grows on me each time I listen. I can't say anything more than the others here have said, Harry crosses the gambit on not only his musical versatility but his talent as well. Great CD, I can listen to the entire CD, not just a few songs, he really shows a more N.O. sound on it as well. I love it!
Nice easy listening stuff September 23, 2007 Nikica Gilic (Zagreb, Croatia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Once thought of being the possible savior force of classical jazz, multi-talented pianist, actor, composer, arranger and singer Harry Connick Jr. more often than not travels the less perilous road of blending musical influences into something we might call middle-of-the road pop-jazz. However, his melange (gumbo?) is often surprising and uplifting, so whether he covers ancient jazz or pop classic, he often comes across fresh. This is a nice easy listening album, although I wouldn't necesarily recomend it to die-hard jazz fans...
Oh, My Nola, Harry Connick, Jr. CD September 7, 2007 Anne B. Ward (Chicago) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was my 1st Harry Connick, Jr. CD--recommended, no less, by my 95 y/o mother who lived in New Orleans all her life until Katrina. I was born and raised in New Orleans, but moved away after college; the whole album is such a great mix of New Orleans sound--jazz, blues (Harry Connick,Jr style), soulful pop, spiritual, big band, honky-tonk piano, etc. You name it, it's there. Thank God for iTunes and the computer and iPods, because I think I'm going to wear this one out! I get tears in my eyes everytime I hear "All These People". Because of this album, I've bought more of his CD's---but this one is my favorite.
