Amazon.com Rise Against returns with a rollicking wallop of an album that further establishes the Chicago-based outfit as one of the great bright hopes for the future of alienation rock. Cut from the same savvy cloth as Bad Religion and Black Flag, Rise Against rocks hard during the martial opus opener, "Chamber The Cartridge," the melodic "Injection," which asks us to imagine that Iron Maiden came from sunny California and not some dreary part of London, and "Ready To Fall," which may be one of the greatest anthems of adolescent estrangement since The Who's "Baba O'Riley." The band also isn't afraid of a good hook and scintillating melody ("Under The Knife"), exploring complex emotions ("Roadside"), or unleashing a bit of old-school breakneck fury sans apology ("Brick"). All of these things demonstrate that Rise Against is drawing from a broader palette than many of its counterparts, one of the reasons it will (indeed, already has) rise above the masses of sound-alike acts vying for the attention of the MySpace generation.-Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description UK version of their 2006 release features one bonus track: 'Built To Last'. Chicago's Rise Against is anything but a single-minded musical outfit. An astounding fusion of unhinged power, ear-grasping melodies, stimulating lyrics and the ability to reach audiences in both underground and mainstream circles, they have redefined the rules. The Sufferer & The Witness, their fourth album, continues to build upon the solid punk foundation - it is a striking collection, with Rise Against using elements from spoken word, expanded balladry, and simply plodding forward with a faster, harder, louder ethic. Polydor.

Rise Against - Sufferer & the Witness November 3, 2008 N. Thompson (Arizona) This CD is awesome. I had it playing on repeat over and over for a few weeks. It's still in my cd changer, but their new cd, Appeal to Reason is now getting most of the playtime.
Solid, but not Amazing October 21, 2008 Sibelan Forrester (The Shire) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Easily more accessible than their debut and more consistent than Siren Song...; this is a good middle ground for Rise Against. The problem is that it lacks the intensity of their first two albums even though it may be more musically mature. No fan of Rise Against will find this disappointing, since it shows overall growth, but old school fans may find something missing.
Awesome!!! October 10, 2008 K. Gardner By far, this is the best music they've made yet. Makes you want to get up and sing along with them. I'd reccomend this one.
Domination!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! October 4, 2008 Craig M. Roberts This album is awesome! There is not a single song that I don't like! It is INSANE!!!!!! I can't wait for the knew album (Appeal To Reason) to come out.
An Amazing Album by and Amazing Band. September 6, 2008 Tyler Marshall (Grafton, Wisconsin) Rise Against is my favorite band out there, and this is the album that truly decided that. This is by far one of their best, right next to Siren Song of the Counter Culture. They keep putting out amazing work and I would like to review each song: 1: Chamber the Cartridge: This song starts out with a small intro, then goes right into a drum roll with "This Is Noise" coming in. All the instruments then start an intro, and it goes right into a powerful song. The chorus is catchy and the song is well written. Score: 8.6/10 2: Injection: An amazing song with a fast, catchy beat. Originally called "Done With The Compass" this song delivers powerful lyrics of drug addiction, and somebody who is trying to get out of the habit. Score: 9.6/10 3: Ready To Fall: Probably the downfall of the album. It's not a bad song by any means but it's probably the worst. Overall there isn't anything truly special about it, but it's still a good song. Score: 7.6/10 4: Bricks: Fast, short, and good song. It's about retaliation against whatever, pretty much their name. It's bridge is very catchy and easily one of the most punk songs they have on the album. Score: 8.6/10 5: Under The Knife: I have yet to understand the metaphor this song portrays, but it talks about surgery as a metaphore. Overall I like this song, and it's pretty good. Score: 8.3/10 6: Prayer of the Refugee: Great song, one of my favorites on the album. A father is telling the story of what happened to their culture, through a very powerful chorus, and it's incredibly catchy. It's a very well written song and I love it. Score: 9.6/10 7: Drones: Great song as well. It's about how sweatshops run and slaves in third world countries work. One of my favorites well with a very catchy chorus. The bass enters with a powerful line, and then they gather into classic Rise Against controlled chaos. Score: 9.1/10 8: The Approaching Curve: The lyrics are very well written, but overall it's not put together right. The verse is spoken word, but...meh, I don't really like that as much as singing. It's a good song though, the chorus is catchy and the instrumentals are pretty good. Score: 7.9/10 9: Worth Dying For: GREAT song. Powerful and catchy, with a catchy chorus and bridge. The verse is a little different than the rest, but it's still good, but not as catchy. The bass enters the bridge with a riff, then they all join again. Over all a great song. Score: 9.7/10 10: Behind Closed Doors: Great song, overall kinda predictable, except for the chorus. Very catchy all the way through and very well written, especially the lyrics. Score: 8.9/10 11: Roadside: A beautiful song, written almost acoustic but with a clean guitar instead, which sets the mood more. No bass or drums, but a fiddle and a female vocalist join Tim and the guitar, and it's a great song. Score: 9.4/10 12: The Good Left Undone: Great song, with a fast verse, and a softer chorus. Bridge is powerful and both guitars work very well together in this track. At the end of the track is an intro to the next song, Survive. Score: 8.7/10 13: Survive: Amazing is one way to put it, but that would be an understatement. This song is by far the best on the album and is amazingly written, and has become one of my favorite by Rise Against. The song is about how they overcome their struggles, and it delivers. This is the only song with profanity, saying "F***" 4 times, giving it it's Explicit Content sticker. If you don't like that, there is a clean version of the album available. Overall this is my favorite song on the album and I know this will get you to love Rise Against. Score: 10/10
