Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The artist who will forever be known as Prince-and could fittingly be known as "The Artist"-is one of the most brilliant, versatile and influential musical forces of his, or any, time. Prince took R&B and regally marched it into genre-blurring horizons previously unknown, fusing rock, funk, soul, psychedelia, pop, and singer-songwriter aesthetics into a sound that was mind-bending and booty-shaking. Sensual, literate, explosive, and groundbreaking, his artistry never stopped evolving and the hits and acclaim never stopped coming. His adventurous reinventions, bold experimentation, stellar instrumental and composing skills and genius for showmanship have placed him high in the pantheon of all-time superstars. "Unique" doesn't begin to describe his royal powers, showcased herein on the first-ever two-disc compilation of his masterful Warner Bros. years.

3 out of 5 stars Where's The Extended Versions Of "Erotic City","Head","Sexy Dancer," and "Party Up"??   April 27, 2008
QUESTION:
How are you going to make the claim of creating "THE ULTIMATE"
Prince collection and not include the extended dance mixes of
"Erotic City" (1984), "Head" (1980), "Sexy Dancer" (1979) or
"Party Up" (1980)???
And they do exist too, because I had every one on 12" back in the day!

Not to mention true Prince fan jams like: "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker",
"If I Was Your Girlfreind" and "Strange Relationship" (All 1987),
"Anothaloverholenyohead" (Extended Version--1986), "Ana-stesia" (1988)
"Lady Cab Driver", "A-U-T-O-matic" and "Irresistible Bitch" (all 1982)
"Party Man" & "Bat-Dance" (both 1989) or even his first hit....
the sizzling "Soft & Wet" (1978).

ULTIMATE PRINCE??--I think not!
When you let 20-ish music executives and studio interns who weren't even around when most of this music was relevant and current make the decisions about what exactly is an "ULTIMATE PRINCE" collective, then
what do you expect? This is a cursory comp with a few good rare
ditties that they haven't included on any of the other mediocore comps!
The 3-Disc "Prince: Greatest Hits & B-Sides", released in the early '90's was pretty comprehensive, but still lacking in many ways as well.
I give this comp 3 stars and say that if you're a youngster just getting
into Prince and what impact his music made on the
80's and early 90's, then, by all means, this is one to buy!

3 out of 5 stars Ultimate Prince...?   April 13, 2008

Prince-Ultimate Prince ***

Now I am really confused at what this is supposed to be. Is this at hits collection, anthology, best of? It fails at all three of those if it is trying to be one.

The song selection on the first disc is great though it skips quite a few songs. But I must say that I love the addition of 'Money Don't Matter 2Night' because that is truly a forgotten classic in Prince's cannon. But it does still seem that a lot is missing, then you realize there is a second disc, great that must be where the rest of the music is. Wrong.

The second disc is a collection of most of the rest of Prince's other big songs but they are "dance remixes" of all the songs, which is cool yes, but they are very out of place on this collection. Someone who is buying this is going to want the original songs, not the remixes of the songs they love. Those remixes should have been saved for reissues of the original albums that they appear on or for a separate remixes album.

But I must say the remixes are not even that good, in fact some of the time they are just down right annoying. Really this collection or whatever it is, is not worth owning unless you are a major Prince fan and want everything he releases.

5 out of 5 stars Extended Hits!   October 28, 2007
This CD has quite a few of his top hits that have been either stretched out or may be extended takes from the original sessions (that's what it sounds like). I'm very pleased with this purchase as I'm sure any Prnce fan will be.

5 out of 5 stars We need the rest of the 12" mixes   October 17, 2007

I rated this 5 stars because: A) the music is outstanding, B) the audio quality is an improvement over previous releases, C) at least we get SOME of the 12" single mixes.

With all that out of the way, this isn't likely to be the best package for newcomers and casual fans looking for all the big hits. The concept here was to present one disc of familiar hit singles, and a second disc of rare extended versions that haven't shown up on CD yet. The problem for casual fans, obviously, is that many huge hits ("Little Red Corvette, "Raspberry Beret," and "Kiss" among them) are included in unfamiliar, lengthier versions.

The problem for hardcore fans is that we want ALL the extended versions that are have still only been officially issued on vinyl. I'm just glad that this release saw fit to include a generous selection of them. MIA are phenomenal extended versions of "I Wish U Heaven" (you haven't heard that song until you've heard the three-part version), "La la la, He he he", and many others that just aren't coming to mind off the top of my head.

The other frustrating part of this release is how GOOD it sounds, to my ears at least. Comparing the songs on disc one to their original CD releases demonstrates just how BADLY Prince's back catalog needs remastering.

For those who haven't ever heard the alternate versions found on disc two, don't think twice about getting this release. In numerous cases, these aren't simply an alternate 'dance mix' in the traditional sense (i.e. - outside producers adding various new electronic rhthym elements, etc) - but rather the comnplete, unedited versions of the songs you already know. "Let's Go Crazy" is a notable example of this - ever notice in the movie "Purple Rain" when the Revolution performs this song there is a section with Prince at the piano? That stuff is in the long version of the song, which I prefer to the album version. "Little Red Corvette" and "Pop Life" are examples of longer versions that even include additional lyrics not heard on the album versions. "Pop Life," in particular, is awesome - the song is a psychedelic funk masterpiece in it's full version. If you haven't heard any of these versions - you are in for a treat. The only one I don't care about is the NPG Mix of "Cream" which ends the disc on a disappointing note - this version is FAR inferior to the original. It would have been much smarter to have included the standard "Cream" on disc one in place of "Gett Off" - which could've then appeared in it's excellent extended version on disc two.

I just hope that eventually the Prince catalog is overhauled, with all the complete 12" versions and non-album b-sides seeing the light of day on legit releases.

4 out of 5 stars This is the Ultimate Prince...for causal fans   October 4, 2007
As a hardcore Prince fan, I was at first really excited to hear about this surprising release. You got to love a two CD set where the "main" disc includes some of the greatest songs in the pop world and the second does as well but in extended forms. And no repeats! They could have easily included both the extended mix and radio verisons of tracks like "Kiss", but they got it right. In all the cases, the mixes on disc 2 only extended great songs and aren't distracting remixes. And even though the second disc is for dance mixes, how about the funk of tracks like "Uptown" and even "Gett Off" to get your moving. And of course signature ballads like the epic "Purple Rain" and even the stirring "Money Don't Matter Tonight" are great examples of a funky arist that can slow down the tempo and show his many talents.

It's still very stifling in many ways, mostly focusing on only his biggest pop tracks. For the 3rd time a Prince collection (counting both "The Hits" disc as one set) ignores the "Batman" tracks...not sure why considering there is little to no question that Prince was not involved in the first, very causal set released by Rhino, "The Very Best Of Prince". I mean, why no "Batdance or "PartyMan". Ok, fine, not for the "The Hits" CDs from 1993 because that set really tries to be not just the hits but the absolute best from an artist (although...it's called "The Hits") and probably had Prince's involvement and maybe he is embarrassed by those tracks on such a sterling set (Madonna did the same by not including `Who's that Girl' and other light poppy tracks that might not be her absolute favorites). Also, for some reason the great top 40 hit "Mountains" never get its due, either!

It really feels like the biggest problem with this is set is what isn't included. It's a two disc set but rather incomplete. The 12"/exteneded dance versions on one disc are very novel and fun and "Let's Work", hardly one of his signature hits, is one of my all time favorite Prince tracks! Nothing wrong with what was included ("She's Always In My Hair" is a great b-side...his best and the only one to be included on here...really?). Still, I struggle understand what they haven't included like "17 Days" and of course "Erotic City". "Erotic City" and "Sexy MF" where originally supposed to be included but I've heard that there was possible Prince involvement in this project....So instead of "Let's Work", how about "Let's Edit", the great legacy and signature tunes of Prince, that is. I don't get it. This CD easily could have been truly ultimate if not at least better with a little messing around with the track listing. It's very disappointing that they not only didn't get it right, but don't even come close. The mix disc is great but it throws off the momentum of the album being chronological....they list the main disc in order as well as the second (for the most part, for some reason the first track is "Let's Go Crazy"). Why not mix in the 12" and make two full discs! How about the tracks he recorded under the WB label but not as Prince proper? This is just a mistake in so many ways and feels like mostly "The Very Best..." (which I'm so glad I didn't buy) and added quite a few good tracks. I would hope they can do better, but I don't want them to attempt this again! This collection is an improvement but let's stop trying. For those who like the big hits (most of the big hits..."Erotic City" is practically a big hit in its own right by now), this is the collection to get but for the most part, it will frustrate hardcores.
