Smithsonian Folk Festival 2008 July 4, 2008 Basil D. Yauger (Wash DC) I had the pleasure of seeing James Hand at the Smithsonian Folk Festival this week 7/08, in Washington, DC. He is truly 'The Real Deal'. His songs are from the heart and his style is impeccable. I bought two of his CD's and brought them home for my wife to listen to; and she loves the music. In fact, he may be performing tomorrow again at the festival; and if he is, we will both go down and allow her to see him in person. James appears to have a lot of miles on him; some of which may have been tough ones; but he is truly a great Country 'Texas style' singer.

James Hand is the absolute definition of what a country music singer is and should be. He is one of those rare singers who come along with a natural talent and immense heart that can drive you to tears when he sings his refrain. In each song, you will hear a story that he tells from either a large or small event that happened in his life that still echoes in his mind and heart today. The quiver in his voice is evidence that the song he is singing at the time isn't just another song to him, but actually a piece of him. As you listen, you can obviously tell that every song is a part of his soul. If you ever get the chances to meet James Hand, you need to jump at it. I heard that James will be releasing a new album this year (2008) and I cannot wait. James Hand...a true gentleman, country singer, poet, artist, philosopher, and friend. Buy this CD now, and buy it again later when you wear yours out. What more can be said.
Top-notch country music January 17, 2008 Stogie Dave (USA) It's like Hank Sr. vocals mixed with BR549 and Dale Watson music in the background. Done deal! Every song is great. If you like real country, you don't want to skip over this.
Thr truth will set you free January 6, 2008 Mary Fritz (Florida, usa) Best sound from a Male since Hank Williams--he is great --wish I could find more of his CD"s-than the 2 available at this time,Mary
Good Old Boy July 24, 2007 Anthony S. Prowse (Melbourne, Australia) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was at a Dale Watson show in Newcastle, Australia and Dale mentioned James hand as a great singer/songwriter. I took note and ordered this album. Once received, it has NOT been off my CD player/s since; and I got it at the end of April 07!!!!! This album is probably one of the finest honky-tonk albums ever to be released. And to think James wrote all the material!! I would put this right up there with anything Hank Williams has done and that's saying something. Before you scoff at that, give this album a good listen and then tell me I'm wrong. The production and playing on this record are first rate. It was produced by Ray Benson (of AATW) and Lloyd Maines with Red Volkaart and Lloyd playing superb guitar and steel respectively. But it's James' voice and songwritng which makes this an absolutely essential country album. His voice cracks slightly now and again as though his heart is about to break and it will send shivers down your spine. His songs are quite personal and show a life of hard times, lost love, heavy drinking and broken hearts; all classic country music fare but James does it better than just about anyone. Just get this album, play it to death and you'll be in Honky Tonk heaven.
