It's the Alternative Compilation You've Been Waiting For December 5, 2007 Everybody Listen 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I picked this CD up from Target for about $5 several years ago and it introduced me to several new artists of whom I will probably be a lifelong fan. I have never written an Amazon review despite the fact I have been a customer for 10 years and a Prime member for two. I cannot say enough about this CD and I have made several copies over the years for friends. Let me begin with my favorite track - a live version of Bloc Party's "Banquet". The first words to the song - "This song is about sex." I had never heard of this group when I purchased the CD and I now listen to them everyday and have seen them twice in concert. If you are a Bloc Party fan, you should buy this CD just for this song. Howie Day's "Collide" is great - the regular version is passable but this live version elevates the song and it does not deteriorate into a typical concert sing-along. The Hold Steady, Rilo Kiley, 30 Seconds to Mars, the 22-20s, Gorillaz and Louis XIV all offer some of their best singles. I've never cared for Billy Corgans' or Ben Folds' solo work, but even their selections are exceptional. Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene" closes out the CD. While I can't listen to a whole CD of RL, I love this song. I am not one of the CD sellers but I regularly check Amazon for other volumes from this series and saw the opportunity to comment on an unforgettable CD. The music is what I call Austin City Limits Alternative (ACLA) - its not targeted to youth but it is not easy listening. This is a must-have CD for fans of non-mainstream singer-songwriters who like to rock.
