| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Merritt's resonant if somewhat conventionally alt-country debut Bramble Rose did little to predict this blue-eyed-soul breakout. A mix of hard-charging guitar rockers, horn-charted grooves, and pensive singer-songwriter ballads, Tambourine might have resulted in a stylistic hodge-podge, but producer George Drakoulias lends the same punchy, live-tracked vitality that distinguished the best work of the Jayhawks, Black Crowes, and Maria McKee. Merritt taps deep into her southern musical roots to find her own voice, and that voice has fully blossomed--her enunciation is clearer, her phrasing sensual without straining. Her best songs balance the urgent economy of classic soul singles with a personal, if not precisely confessional, intensity. Like Van Morrison and Dusty Springfield, Merritt follows her country, soul, and rock & roll instincts to find a single ecstatic sound, one that culminates in the full-out gospel testimony of "Shadow in the Way." Tambourine may not quite live up to the Dusty in Memphis comparisons, but it may very well wind up the album of Tift Merritt's career. --Roy Kasten

One of Best Written Collections Ever! April 8, 2008 J. Aiken (Pittsburgh, PA) This second CD by Tift surpasses even the best of other female singer/songwriters like Carole King and Shania Twain, who deservingly had albums that were a huge commercial success. Tambourine is great from top to bottom and the last 5 songs are as good as it gets. To fully appreciate her superb songwriting, one needs to listen and read along with the lyrics a couple of times. Her songs combine sensible lyrics with excellent melodies that cover the whole spectrum of tempo. It is hard to pin her down to one genre, but this album deserved more that just the Grammy nomination that it got. I don't see how every review could not give it 5 stars!
A Very Good Album March 4, 2008 Russell D. Melling (Coatesville, Indiana) Tift Merritt's sophmore effort is a great combination of inspired songwriting and a stellar performance. Mike Campbell's guitar playing adds some familiar flavor to this great album.
Great Sounds March 25, 2007 R. Kelley (Happy Jack, AZ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Again, Tift Merritt delivers some great sounds. The combination of her sweet voice coupled with the sounds of her strong band is what makes for some of the best music in country. It's her songs we should be hearing more often on the top 40. But like so many other obscure talented song writers and singers, Tift is left in obscurity on CMT or GAC and their award shows.
No So Interesting February 12, 2007 Writing in Washington (Washington, D.C.) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
My wife introduced my to Tift Merritt's music when we were dating ... so I've got a soft spot for Tift and was really looking forward to hearing her second album, Tambourine. I'm disapointed. There's not mush to this album. It's lost the alt-country sound and is more of a boring pop album. Bramble Rose is much, much more interesting.
I found my new favorite female singer. April 22, 2006 Gary C. House (ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GEORGIA USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was channel surfing the other day and landed on GAC (Great American Country)and this video was playing by a beautiful young blonde lady who first caught my eye then she caught my ear and then she caught my soul. I was amazed at this woman's soulfulness. I had heard some of her stuff with the Two Dollar Pistols but nothing prepared me for the sound she has found. I am hooked. One reviewer said she wouldn't be able to sell this stuff and he is probably right. If the stations that play all that redneck rock would play some real music I guarantee it would sell. Tift Merritt deserves to be a big star and while she may never be a huge success I believe she will be able to have a long career especially if she continues to put out the caliber of music on this disc. If you like great writing, great hooks and great singing buy this album you will not regret it
