Kenny Rogers At His Country Best March 18, 2005 R. It begins with "Laura (what's he got that I ain't got) a top 20 hit in 1976. Like the rest of this album this is pure country. Of course Rogers would add rock and pop influences into most of his follow-ups, with a little bit of disco material (The First Edition were one of the 1st acts to record disco in the early 1970s i.e "Something's burning", "Love Woman", etc) he was still making decent songs of course, but this album is 100% traditional country music. This contains many love songs, of course Rogers is now world famous for that. This was where it started. A #1 hit Country album in America, this was his first big hit album on an international level, he had had hit singles all over the world and placed 4 albums in the US top 85, but this was his first album to be a massive seller world-wide. In Britain, for example, it was one of the biggest selling Country albums of 1977, hitting the pop top 20. The story song "Lucille" is a country ditty that made it's way to #1 not only on the US country charts, but also #1 on the pop charts in 12 countries (including the uk pop charts) in 1977. This album was a nice success and more importantly all 11 songs are classics that stand up there with any other music. Better things were to come for Kenny Rogers, but back in the days before that was, people could be forgiven in wondering if he would be able to better this.
Traditional country from Kenny October 16, 2004 Peter Durward Harris (Leicester England) People think of Kenny as a purveyor of pop country music, some of which has little to do with country, but this album, originally released on vinyl in 1977, shows that Kenny could sing traditional country better than anyone. The standout track is, of course, Lucille, which remains one of my all-time favorite songs. Despite having such a traditional sound, it was a major international hit, going all the way to number one in the UK pop charts. Kenny also had a top twenty country hit with the opening track, another great up-tempo song. Elsewhere there are plenty of song that may be familiar to you via other versions such as Mother country music (Vern Gosdin), Green green grass of home (Tome Jones or Porter Wagoner or any number of other singers), Till I get right (Tammy Wynette), Son of Hickory Holler's tramp (O C Smith) an Putting in overtime at home (Charlie Rich). Lay down beside me, though written by Don Williams, was not recorded by Don until later - it eventually appeared on his album, Tulsa time. Of the other songs, Kenny also recorded a duet version (with Dottie West) of Why don't we go somewhere and love. I don't recall hearing the other two song (I wasn't man enough, While I play the fiddle) elsewhere, but they are brilliant, just like everything else here. This is a classic album that may now be hard to find but it's well worth it. It is the most traditional country album that Kenny ever recorded and it is therefore nice to hear it as an album rather than hear them sandwiched between others on compilations. Tracks Laura (what's he got that I ain't got) I wasn't man enough Mother country music Why don't we go somewhere and love Green green grass of home Till I get it right Lucille The son of Hickory Holler's tramp Lay down beside me Putting in overtime at home While I play the fiddle
