Good Stuff November 6, 2005 Kanishka Ray (Alexandria, VA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album listens like a Best of Swing Out Sister album...except that all the compositions are original. It is beautifully appealing as a result. Each song harkens back to some musical experiment undertaken in the past. For instance "La Source" is an instrumental revisitation of "Making the Right Move" while "Caipirinha" is a second take (17 years later) on "Coney Island Man". Other examples abound the rest of the release. SOS have been difficult to track down since their last US release "Shapes and Patterns" which was a great effort....so I took a listen to this when I learned it had been released. I was pleasantly surprised. Most SOS albums tend to get better with further listening, but I picked up on four immediate hits (songs I liked on the initial listen) for me: Two instrumentals: 1. Caipirinha - awesome song, lots of vocalizing by Andy and Corinne...the harmonizing of the voices is quite nice. One of their best tracks to date. 2. La Source - infectiously catchy, yet mellow and understated, reminds me a lot of "Making the Right Move", which was a sublimely beautiful piece. Corinne's voice in combination with the saxophone is simply dreamy. Two vocal tracks: 1. Happy Ending - catchiest vocal tune, and the lyrics are at least somewhat relevant to me. 2. Love Won't Let You Down - more catchy, excellently executed pop.... There are other good tunes as well, some will take some getting used to. This album is no masterpiece like Kaleidoscope World, but it's up there with the best of the rest.
70's style modern synth-pop = One Great CD! December 12, 2004 Steve Bradford (Frederick, Maryland USA) Swing Out Sister's 2004 'Where Our Love Grows' is by far one of their best CD's. I was impressed by the lyrics of 'From my window' (a great song) to 70's beat-laden 'Love won't let you down' to the quirky yet upbeat 'Certain shades of limelight' to one of their best song ever, 'Happy ending'. Corrine Drewery and Andy Connell's 'Where our love grows' bring stability to their recent slew of juxtapositioned releases that never really found new appeal - nor much radio play. While Drewery's deep chanteuse voice carries like before, here melodies now have a genuine one-on-one character. Andy Connell's beats just amaze me. This guy is a genius behind the keyboards and synths. WOW! I highly recommend 'Where our love grows'. Its appeal seems to already be growing. For example, 'Where our love grows' is now being played at all Best Buys! (Rather funny, since they don't stock this CD) The only thing I disliked was the outrageou$ price for this CD. Since there are no US distributors, you will have to shell-out top-dollar for this Japanese-only release (see Universal International-Japan). The Sisters are back! Enjoy, -Steve
A bit disappointing November 17, 2004 AnotherMusicExpert (Duluth, MN USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think the overzealous reviews for this disc are nothing more than relief that a new CD by this great duo is out. I think they're the greatest "somewhat unknown" group in decades and their early works are incredible. I found this CD to be fairly mundane really, kind of the same old, same old Swing Out of the last few CDs. I enjoyed the upbeat tracks on their early CDs, and found this to be somewhat sleepy and fairly "down". Not to say it's not enjoyable, but they need the spark of their earlier release back. If this was a bit easier on the wallet I would have enjoyed it more too. Corrine is the best female vocalist I've heard, and Andy an incredible writer, but they need new hooks to put them back in elevators & stores everywhere.
No need to pay this price! October 20, 2004 David Parker (burlington, vermont United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
YO - finally, a new S.O.S. album is available domestically (and here at Amazon)! Wonderful album, but not at 35 dollars!!! Go find that one.
Just Average SOS September 26, 2004 Eric Something (Seattle, Wa) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I brought this while on a first time visit to the U.K. I have all of the other SOS albums and couldn't resist getting it before it's October USA release date. I wish I would have waited because I really wasn't impressed. "Somewhere Deep In The Night" was so gorgeous. WOLG goes back to where they left off with perhaps "Shapes And Patterns." "Love Won't Let You Down" sounds like an outtake from that album. It's so hoeky. Then there are the numerous instrumentals with the Carpenteresque/Brasil'66 chirping adlibs that are just throwaways. Is SOS running out of gas. Corrine's lyrics are also really didn't grab me, but to be fair, if the music were as stellular as it was on "Somewhere Deep In The Night" then I wouldn't have really cared. I gave the album 3 stars because eventhough, it's not really their best work, it still is a solid collection of material and I'm sure people in general will like it. One thing that I'm continuing to understand with music is sometimes you must have certain personal experiences at the right time to really connect with certain music. I imagine WOLG is that type of songfest. I definitely felt a high sense of emotinal connection with "Get In Touch With Yourself" immediately. That is still my favorite SOS platter. By the way, isn't it time for this group to release some dance music again?
