This EP's remixes do a fine job of rehabilitating Madonna's largely ignored American Life album. Jason Nevins supplies a powerful mix of the moving "Nothing Fails" that deserves to be the hit that returns the superstar to saturation play, while versions of "Love Profusion" and "Nobody Knows" suggest that these songs, too, haven't been given enough credit as the minor late-Madonna classics they are. "American Life" itself takes on new wattage with this literally bangin' hard-rock remix. "Your Honesty," an outtake from the disc's sessions, recalls a number of superior Madonna dance tracks; its you're-good-for-me sentiment is believably sweet. The MTV Video Music Awards medley works less well as a merely audio artifact than it did on-screen with that kiss, while one hopes that the next time Missy Elliott collaborates with Madonna, it yields a more substantial result than this CD's slight remake of "Into the Groove." --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Place to Visit   July 27, 2006
Peter Marinari (Philadelphia, PA USA)

Remixed and Revisited offers reduxes of four tracks from Madonna's underrated American Life, and adds a live cut, an updated oldie, and a lost track to round out its seven song length.

Nevin's Mix of "Nothing Fails" opens with classical guitar riffing and a kick drum beat that sounds more apt than the artificial steel string on the original, but strays from its clever re-imagination with an annoyingly tacked-on buzz-saw guitar track later in the song (reminding us that yes, it is just a remix). "Nobody Knows Me"s vocoder profusion is as unimpressive here as it is on Life, even with the overbearing Mount Sims Old School Mix to give it some context.

The more exciting re-imaginations on this disc are both Headcleanr Rock Mixes by Ray Carroll. "Love Profusion" is transformed from a largely acoustic track driven by a drum machine into a surging rock success, with palm-muted verses and a real (?) drum kit swelling into an out-and-out distorted thrash for the proclamation of "You make me feel!" It is without a doubt one of most exhilirating Madonna remixes of all time, toeing the line between enhancement and total reimagination perfectly.

Carroll's take on "American Life" features a similarly clever re-cut of original vocals with a nu-metal power chord bonanza to back them up, but mostly eschews the excellent verses of the original in favor of Madonna's half-rap (half pathetic-cry-for-help) coda. As opposed to the seamless enhancement of "Profusion," this rock juxtaposition seems almost ironic; Mad comes off sounding like a teenage girl garage band auditioning to open for Linkin Park.

The inclusion of the Britney-kissing "Like A Virgin/Hollywood" medley from the MTV Music Awards is unfortunate; Spears delivers a credible 1984 Madonna impression and is subsequently blown away by a lost-sounding Christina Aguilera, but the slapped together stab at "Hollywood" along with Missy Elliott is regrettable. Preferable is Elliott's hijacking of "Get Into The Groove," which is a fine reprise of an excellent dance-floor cut, complete with a slightly altered chorus.

Unreleased cut "Your Honesty" could have made this hit-or-miss EP a solid blow, but instead it just feels tacked on. With its Dallas Austin co-write and R&B harmony vocals it is in all probability an extra cut from the Erotica sessions. It's a decent effort, but sounds hopelessly antiquated in the context of the present-day remixes and Madonna's recent vocal style.

Aside from serving as a terrific "Love Profusion" single, Remixed and Revisited serves to prove that Madonna's deft genre-hopping from pop queen to R&B diva to acoustic mama works because almost any of her songs can be easily (and radically) re-interpreted, even across genre lines. Still, though R&R is better than the average remix disc, it doesn't add much to a Madonna fan's catalogue.

3 out of 5 stars My Complaints With This EP   June 23, 2006

1) Why only 4 remixes? There could of been a lot more. AL spawned a lot of awesome mixes! I wanted at least one "Die Another Day" remix!
2) Why are all the remixes of AL material? She could have included some "Don't Tell Me" or "What It Feels Like For a Girl" mixes, too.
3) There should of been an accompanying DVD of all the "American Life" videos- it would of made the EP sell a lot more, believe me.
4) Of all the live performances, why did she have to include the horrible Britney Spears one? One from her Drowned World Tour would of been better.
5) Lastly, what's up with the Gap song. Instead, she could of put the real version of "Into the Groove" on it, the version that has so far only appeared on the "Angel" single! It could of finally been on a Madge album!

5 out of 5 stars Um, Joe Miller? WHAT IN THE BLOODY HELL WERE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!   June 22, 2006

Madonna has been around for 23 freaking years! YOU CAN'T TOUCH HER! Oh, and the *ahem* haters, shut up or, at the very least, make a review based on the music, NOT your opinion of the artist. A lot of the ones I've seen are not even relevant. "MADONNA needs to face that she is OLD and HER career's OVER!" Boo f---ing hoo. Madonna will be around forever, because even after she's gone, her legacy and impact on music will still remain.

REVIEW
1. Nothing Fails-Nevins Mix (3:52, 10/10): Nice. Much better than his rock mixes.
2. Love Profusion-Headcleannr Rock Mix (3:16, 11/10): This is great! The beat is cool!
3. Nobody Knows Me-Mount Sims Old School Mix (4:46, 9.8/10): The worst NKM remix by Matt Sims. It's okay at the most.
4. American Life-Headcleanr Rock Mix (4:01, 10/10): Interesting. A heavy-metal version of this originally bleepy techno song. I like it, although it is a little too loud sometimes. Maybe it's my speakers...
5. 2003 VMA Performance (5:30, Madonna: 10/10, Christina: 11/10, Britney 0/10, Missy: 10/10): The "soundtrack" to THAT KISS, this is the only song I didn't put on my iPod. Wanna know why? Britney absolutely RUINS it. She needs to stick to lip-synching. The rest are phenomenal, Christina in particular. While Madonna was good, her voice was too deep. Missy's always great. This is the lowest point on the EP. However, it redeems itself.
6. Into the Hollywood Groove, f/Missy Elliott-The Passengerz Mix (3:45, 10/10): It may be an extended GAP commercial, but it's still good! It has Madonna re-singing parts of "Hollywood" and "Into the Groove" with Missy doing an awesome (but not lyrically-mind-boggling) rap.
7. Your Honesty (4:07, 11/10): Wow, what a gem! This is a "Bedtime Stories" outtake. Great R&B. LOVIN' IT!

4 out of 5 stars REMIXED, REVISITED, RESTORED!   November 12, 2005
Boy from the 80's (PASIG CITY Philippines)

when i bought his remix ep in late 2004, i thought the tracks will be as lengthy as her 1987 remix ep, "you can dance." the tracks could be called as "single remix versions." and it worked to their advantage. the tracks were concise, brief, and leaves you wanting for more!

for the remixed part:
one could conclude that this was released to promote her much maligned (and wrongly so) american life, which is actually a very good album, and in my opinion, better than "music." i think the strategy worked. remixed and revisited restored whatever "lost glory" may have been unjustly pasted to the american life album.

the ep enahnced the stronger songs from american life. nothing fails, love profusion, and american life all improved in their remixed form. but the surprise of the ep is nobody knows me. it is an outstanding 80's retro-style song that reminded me of madonna's heydays! aside from love profusion, this overlooked track is the gem of the remix ep.

for the revisited part:
into the groove/hollywood medley is a rare opportunity to re-do one of madonna's best back-alley tracks of 1985. the updated version seems to signify that madonna songs are timeless - and the proof is into the hollywood groove.

the live version of like a virgin/hollywood is a homage to madonna's classic single that catapulted her to superstardom, and at the same time, promoting the 2nd single from american life. two birds with one stone.

the unreleased track "your honesty" is pure delight. for fans, any unreleased track is a divine experience. the song could have been a big hit in 1994 (bedtime stories) but i think she decided not to include it because it would run against the album's r&b motiff. could it be?

the restored part:
all the hullaballoo about american life is unfair. proof: remixed and revisited. it restored whatever misgivings may have been caused by american life. the songs from that album are actually great poop songs, delivered by the one and only queen.

long live madonna!
