Madonna's never really been a musical trendsetter; she's a trend champion. She's always felt an affinity with underground culture, but not until her soul-searching trip-hop breakthrough Ray of Light had this love been the sole mainstay of her albums. On Music, she's inducted the cool funk of Parisian electro-pop as the latest addition to her musical court, abruptly closing the chapter of the movement's niche status. Here, French DJ Mirwais Ahmadzai takes on the majority of production credit, with Light's William Orbit billed on two tracks; the result is a collection of songs that often links arm-in-arm with Franco-techno groups ranging from Daft Punk to Air. Madonna relinquished unprecedented production control on Ray of Light, which resulted in the best album of her career. On Music, she does the same, dividing the CD into three distinct voices. Orbit's train-track-clacking drum loops churning under citrusy trance ("Runaway Lover" and "Amazing") shimmer for the headphone set. When Ahmadzai diverts from his pure-play French-style club burners ("Impressive Instant" and the title track), he employs several temporarily fashionable gimmicks such as vocoder effects ("Nobody's Perfect") and spacious keyboard work combined with acoustic guitar ("I Deserve It"). Lyrically, Madonna's introspection and love songs are some of her most intimate. Given the surrounding context of the album, "I Deserve It" is an outright folk song, and on "Don't Tell Me," she forgoes precisely enunciated singing for the aching plead of an emotive R&B crooner. For a second time, instead of exploiting an of-the-moment subgenre, she immortalizes it. And in doing so, she simultaneously draws massive mainstream attention to a deserving class of dance music and raises the bar for Top 40 pop. --Beth Massa

Music being the album directly following Ray of Light is an amazing recording. The sound is crisp, the keyboard sounds are great and the use of vocoder is right on the mark. William Orbit is a great producer and the combination of him with Madonna is pure gold. Impressive Instant is my favorite track on the album, and I also love Paradise (not for me) and Nobody's perfect. The book-let is a sorry story and that is such a shame. No lyrics. Very few photos. Still this is an amazing record that should not be missed!

With Ray of Light being her best album to date and such a hard act to follow, it is not as good as ROL, but then again, what is? So for this review I shall put aside ROL.
Music is somewhat inspired from her leftover "Veronica Electronica" vibe. Although promoted as her "ghetto fabulous" album, we really only see that materializing on a couple tracks: Music and Impressive Instant. With a couple fillers thrown in, the rest is heartfelt and very honest.
" I deserve it" is her "falling in love" song and one of the best on the album. "What it feels like for a girl" is a throw back to her I am woman, hear me roar days, but instead of in -your- face preaching, she is reaching and soothing. One of the darkest and most moving tracks is "Paradise Not For Me" but it is not so dark it turns one off, instead it ropes you in. "Don't Tell Me" is the stand out track, veering off for a bit of a country feel, it is a classic Madonna about her never ending quest for true love.
This may not get as much play as other Madonna albums in your collection, but worth the money and is a decent album in its own right. Not her worst, not her best, somewhere in the middle.

This is one of her best cd's!! A great selection of song to dance to and feel the groove. She delivers so much variety and her song writing is always very heartfelt.
I bought this cd when it came out, but after many moves I seem to have lost the original copy, so I recently purchased another one. For me, Madonna's albums are well worth the money. She always has a number of great tracks mixed in with some good ballads. Working with the best producers in the business, she delivers an outstanding album here with Music.
Following up "Ray Of Light" was a tough act...Madonna put in a good try June 3, 2008

This stuff is addictive!
Not as cohesive, or stunning, as Ray Of Light, Music has its share of strong offerings. The title track, formulaic funk, succeeds implausibly with its relentless optimism and nova engineering; endearing. "Impressive Instant" pushes the outtaspace triphop thang; dope. "Amazing" is a bit rote but, wow, that break with the stereo panning; lovely. "Don't Tell Me," with its 'f'ed up' acoustic intro, has the classic Madonna sass; rock. Then, there's the big track ~ which both entices and unnerves me: "What It Feels Like For a Girl." A trans anthem of sorts, Madonna starts off with a canny feminist stance, then dilutes the potential with erotic imagery; confusing. Whatever, she's getting smarter with each outing and deserves her ultra iconography.
She's (only) one Top 10 away from dethroning Elvis.
