(I've Been) Reviewin' So Long........ ;) March 2, 2008 ! Metamorpho ;) (Castle in Scotland) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Yes people, I am back with the expected follow-up review on "The Heart of Chicago, Vol 2". You did not believe I would return, did you? While it is true I was doing my meditation exercises this morning, I suddenly realized the overwhelming obligation I have to each one of you out there to be complete in my undertakings. Such sacrifice! Such nobility! Such selflessness for the masses! Such an unquenchable thirst to ramble and take up your valuable time! O.K. O.K. I know it's a bit much at times. But, there's a price to pay for excellence you know. ;) Anyway, this completes this 2 c.d. series and this one is just as essential as the first. Now, I really didn't get too far into the sound of Chicago last time. There is rock here certainly. But they fuse it with jazz and big band considerations. Totally contemporary. But the key here, I feel, is that they have their own unique sound. Nobody but Chicago sounds like Chicago. But, this is a band which relies, in equal measure, on each individual contribution. They each have a part to play and, with the wise arrangements, the sound becomes an effort of meticulous craftsmanship. They could take a so-so tune and make it pristine. But, lucky for us, none of the songs here or on the companion piece lack anything. And the songs? Generous and essential. This one has many, many of their gems. "Old Days" (which is among their very best), "Baby, What a Big Surprise", "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long", "Feelin' Stronger Everyday", and the inimitable "25 or 6 to 4". Yes. Yes. You too can own your own Lite FM station just by acquiring these two discs. You may write to me, Metamorpho c/o my scottish castle for business opportunities. There is a small deposit - but I do accept PayPal. In closing - Chicago is talented and easy on the ears. They may appear static and uninspiring to some - however they have achieved their place in American popular culture by remaining true to their values. Middle of the road and uncontroversial - yes. But, the goal was joy in good music. And they've more than met that. If you want Chicago represented in your archives and cannot afford to get it all, then these two discs will definitely do the trick for you. Now, I must get back to meditating and thinking up a new and fresh review for my dedicated public! FM Station Owner ----- Metamorpho ;)
The heart of chicago volume II September 9, 2007 Humberto Mejias (Caracas, Venezuela) Luis Mejia (son) - The Heart Of Chicago vol. 1 may contain a better approach into their truly famous hits and most memorable songs, but The Heart Of Chicago vol. 2, while still having a group of famous songs, it also contains in its tracks some most comprehensible melodies, as Chicago is a band with some major numbers of hits, is really comfortable and correct to release two volumes of their hits. The album is as good for beginners as the first volume, while it keeps some really famous and comprehensible songs like the eternal "Feeling Stronger Every Day" and the most famous, fast paced "25 0r 6 To 4", making a more slight but correct approach into their famous hits, while they also focus in their eras, as their early, politically charged or meaningful hits like "Dialogue (Part 1 And 2)", as well as the other two songs past mentioned, "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Feeling Stronger Every Day". It also possesses a group of their most melodic and some romantic songs like the slow burning "No Tell Lover", the poppy "Old Days", and their jazzy but romantic "Call On Me" and "(I've Been) Searching So Long". And its this second volume which captures their latest hits from their latest albums like "All Roads Lead To You", "Love Me Tommorow", "Baby What A Big Surprise", "You're Not Alone", "What Kind Of Man Would I Be" and "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love". Still, this second volume, apart from the two very famous songs previously mentioned, it contains a big amount of comprehensible but minor hits, and it also keeps an excessive approach into their latest hits, while all the songs are pretty convincing and enjoyable, volume one is the compilation which captures their truly greatest, but still this sound excellent after hearing the first volume, so make sure to buy both.
THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT OF VOLUME 1 May 7, 2007 C. Bellegarrigue (El Salvador) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This disc, like its sister volume 1, is the perfect way to introduce Chicago to the people who need to know that incredible group; excellent songs like NO TELL LOVER (pecious ballad), I DON'T WANNA LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE (powerful number), classics like LOVE ME TOMORROW, 25 OR 6 TO 4, BABY WHAT A BIG SURPRISE, including some of their 70's material like DIALOGUE, OLD DAYS and FEELIN'STRONGER EVERY DAY, some of their 80's songs like YOU'RE NOT ALONE and WHAT KIND OF MAN I WOULD BE; there are two new unreleased songs like SHOW ME A SIGN and ALL ROADS LEAD TO YOU... By the way, if you have the volume 1 and this volume 2, YOU HAVE ONLY THE BEST OF THIS INCREDIBLE GROUP!!
Superb collection October 29, 2005 Pierre Mhler (Sweden) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great compilation. I usually don't like compilations like this but this one includes 3 songs from "the lost album", Stone of Sisyphus (SOS). Probably the band's best album since the early 70's. Too bad the tracklisting above is not correct. This is the right track list: 1. All roads lead to you 2. Niagara falls 3. The pull (from SOS) 4. Here with me (from SOS) 5. You come to my senses 6. Please hold on 7. Show me a sign 8. Bigger than Elvis (from SOS) 9. What you're missing 10. Forever 11. Explain it to my heart 12. 25 or 6 to 4 13. We can last forever 14. Along comes a woman (Dance mix) 15. Hard to say I'm sorry/Get away
The Heart of Chicago volume II August 20, 2005 D. Francella (Frederick County , MD) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
About 8 years ago while I was at work I heard two songs on the redio "All Roads lead to you" and "25 or 6 to 4". I thought those were the coolest songs ever. So I went home that night and asked my dad what band did the song "25 or 6 to 4". He told me a story about how Chicago was his favorite band growing up and how he was in horn band playing Chicago songs in the early 1970s. So I went out and bought "IX" and "Heart of Chicago volume II" I thougt "Dialoque (pt 1 @ 2)", "All Roads Lead To You" , "Call on Me" , "Feelin Stronger Every Day" , "I am a Man" and, "25 or 6 to 4" are the best tracks. I am really not a fan of 80s chicago at all. If your just looking for a greatest hits Chicago album this is not the one to buy. If your a fan and you want the two new songs "All Roads Lead to You" , and "Show Me a Sign" buy it. Look for used copy first. I am 28 I do not remember Chicago ever being popular. I am Punk Rocker who owns all the Chicago albums.
