Amazon.com essential recording Because this 1988 album produced hits for others ("Passionate Kisses" for Mary Chapin Carpenter, "The Night's Too Long" for Patty Loveless), Williams is best known as a songwriter. She certainly deserves the rep: her "Side of the Road," for example, expresses the tension between loving another and remaining yourself better than any song ever written. But what makes this album so special is her voice. When she sings about wanting to visit "Crescent City," she packs more sheer longing into her delivery than even the greatest of songs could express. And, bonus, Lucinda Williams is chock full of great songs. --David Cantwell

My very favorite LW March 30, 2008 Peter Chordas (Portland, OR USA) I saw her recently on the David Letterman Show perform a song from her new disc and I can't say I wanted to run out and buy it. But this CD has something for everyone; rock, blues, great lyrics... There are two versions of "Side of the Road" on it. One is a studio recording and another is live. I go back and forth between which one I like better. She is a very good song writer who speaks from the heart. Her voice can be a little edgy at times but she is original. I also like "Something about what happens" as a ballad with great lyrics and acoustic guitar playing. My friend Jim and I did a backpacking trip and drove 10 hours to get to the trailhead. He had this tape in his car and I was hooked after the first time he popped it in. A great album and association with it.

You can find this record if you look for it, in new condition for normal prices. If you can't find it, buy it from one of these people asking $45-70. No one who loves their sibling, New Orleans, or convertibles can fail to connect with Crescent City. Bonnie Raitt on her best day wishes she had written "The Night's Too Long" or "Big Red Sun Blues." Passionate Kisses and Side of the Road are great, but only are complements to the material on this record. See her live, buy all her records, do something to hear this woman sing some of these great songs she has written, played and, as far as any listener can tell, lived.
The Definitive Lucinda Williams Album May 11, 2006 Buffy (Sunnydale) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This self-titled release by Lucinda Williams is still her best album as a whole. Every song is a gem and all the songs fit together nicely as a whole. I loved this cd so much I bought it on both cassette and cd when it originally came out. The tape died a long time ago, but the cd is still holding up well. Note that the original release of this album had 12 tracks on it. Any tracks tacked on after that are extras that were not part of the original song sequence.
essential listening for anyone with a heart April 7, 2006 uber-poseur (cambridge, ma) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Great to sing along to (and great to sing in the shower ;), great to drive to, great to cheer you up when you're blue and there to comfort you when you need it most. You'll feel like you knew every song in your heart when they're playing, even if they're playing for the first time. Some may say the songs are raw and simplistic, but therein lies their beauty. Each word is delivered with pure emotion, each strummed chord just feels right. This album still holds up for me after hundreds of plays, and is a perfect introduction to anyone that has not yet been graced by the talents of Lucinda Williams. She's amazing live too, go see her if you ever get the chance!
Raw...and still the best September 6, 2005 Claudia Adams 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I just plucked this CD out of my "all time favorites" collection to hear "Crescent City" - the one song that floated in my head for days since hurricane Katrina tore the heart out of New Orleans. The longing to go there, missing the old days when "we used to..." are EXACTLY how I felt when this tragedy occurred. I always knew Lucinda had an incredible talent for writing - from the time I first saw her performing on Austin City Limits in the early 90s. To me, this CD is the epitome of good music because it is just enough to connect for most people - not over the top in poetry, but with far more depth than most country music, and no synthetic sound. I think of this CD as "raw' because there is nothing flashy about it. Lyrics are clearly from the heart, and instruments are played in a traditional and purely unadulterated form. You hear the fiddle, the drums, the bass, guitars, all orchestrated in a way that only the fiercly independent Lucinda could have done. It is perfect. This is what I'd like to see performed live again in an intimate venue. It is what I play on the porch on a hot summer afternoon. It will forever remain an "all time favorite" for me.
