Spread Your Wings And Prepare To Fly, Butterfly!!! June 4, 2005 Joy Elizabeth Teets (Fairfax, VA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mariah's metamorphosis album, Butterfly, was the start of phase two of Mariah's music career. Mariah was divorcing Tommy Mottola, she changed her look, and this album was the first of future albums to feature hip-hop collaborations. But one thing that definitely has not changed: THE VOICE!!! Mariah's beautiful, powerful, soaringly 7 octave voice is as prominent as ever!! And I love phase two of Mariah as much as phase one because even with the more hip-hop and R&B sound, Mariah's voice truly shines so I love it all!! The first single, Honey, was Mariah's 3rd #1 single to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 1! At this point, 3 of Mariah's singles debuted at #1 with Fantasy and One Sweet Day. I love Honey, it's a really cool upbeat song. I actually like the Bad Boy Remix best because it just sounds cooler. Butterfly is my all time favorite ballad from this album and Mariah's voice is amazing! I love the lyrics "Spread Your Wings And Prepare To Fly, For You Have Become A Butterfly." My All became another #1 on Billboard. This ballad is my 2nd favorite ballad on this album. It's such a wonderful, romantic ballad with Spanish guitar. I love it!! The Roof is a really cool R&B song and I really like the music itself as well, it's really unique. The song Fourth Of July is said to be the sister song to Underneath The Stars and I can see why since they do sound alike in some ways but I can notice a difference. It's a wonderful slow ballad with the sound of birds and Mariah's high notes. Breakdown is a mix of R&B and Hip-Hop featuring Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone from Bone Thugs & Harmony and more birds if you really listen. It's a cool song, not one of my all time favorites but I still like it a lot. Babydoll is a cool R&B song that I really like. I love the music that goes along with it. Close My Eyes is a really cool mid-tempo song with this melody with the piano that I also love! The song Whenever You Call is another favorite and and I love the lyric "And You, Have Opened My Heart, And Lifted Me Inside, By Showing Me Yourself Undisguised." There is another version with Brian McKnight but I love the version with just Mariah more!! Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) is a cool short version of the whole Fly Away Club Mix and I love it. You can get up and dance for a few minutes!! The remake that Mariah chose for this album is The Beautiful Ones which is originally by Prince. Mariah sings this ballad with Dru Hill and it's an amazing cover. I totally love the way Mariah sings in this song, I totally love it!! Outside is the album closer and it's cool how the tempo changes from slow in the beginning to mid-tempo in the middle. It's a great album closer and a very personal message about how Mariah feels like she's on the outside. This import version of Butterfly has two bonus tracks which I really love! The first is Honey (So So Def Radio Mix) featuring Da Brat & JD. I love this remix and it's cool how Mariah actually put some different lyrics for this remix. The other bonus track is Honey (Def Club Mix) which, at first, you think it's just a shorter version of the Classic Mix but there are a lot of differences and I totally love how at the end, the uniqueness of the actual music, it's awesome!!! I totally love it!!! Butterfly may be more R&B and Hip-Hop flavored but any TRUE Mariah Carey fan will accept and embrace it like all her other albums. I have, I love it, as I am a TRUE Mariah fan who has always stood by her and her music and always will until the end of time!!

Awsome CD, but a little dissapointed August 12, 2002 Patricia A. Hautala (Ramsay, Michigan United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This cd is awsome. When I ordered this item it came with the original cover and the extra booklet didn't come with it. It is still a great cd and it comes with a lyric sheet. MUST HAVE
Masterpiece April 15, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
In my opinion Butterfly is the best work Mariah Carey has ever done in her career. The album was released around the time Mariah was having trouble in her marriage with Tommy Mottola, and the songs on this cd express a desire to be set free and fly away. This is her most creative album to date, each song was carefully written and sung, its simply a masterpiece. At this time Columbia was not promoting her as well as they have been. Honey, the album's first single quickly became a #1 single, as did My All after its release, but those were the only two singles really released from this album domestically in North America. Fans in the UK were given singles for Butterfly, The Roof and Breakdown. The standout track on this album is the title track Butterfly, a song about the desire to end a relationship, wanting to fly away, knowing that one day their paths will lead back to each other. Mariah sings with so much conviction on this song, it is truly beautiful and breathtaking. Fourth of July and The Roof are dreamy songs that remember those glorious moments spent together with her partner. Fourth of July is the Underneath The Stars of the album if you will. Breakdown is a nice R&B/hip hop type song that features Bone Thugs N Harmony. Babydoll is another R&B flavored song. In fact, with Butterfly Mariah has made a successful transition into R&B. Many of the songs on this cd are ballads, in fact the only upbeat songs include Honey, Breakdown, Babydoll and Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise). The album is very ballad heavy. Close My Eyes is a beautiful, touching song about remembering one's childhood, sweet and innocent. Whenever You Call is an outstanding ballad which just soars. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) is simply just a remix of Butterfly, like she usually has at least one remix on her albums (ever since Daydream). The Beautiful Ones is a cover of the 1984 Prince song from his Purple Rain Soundtrack. Its a beautifully done song, and Dru Hill lends his vocals. Outside is a very sad song about acceptance and the search to find it. This version of Butterfly also includes two remixes of Honey, which is a nice addition for fans. This is a must have album. If you get even one Mariah Carey CD, get this one. She sings with so much emotion, she put so much pain into this album, you can feel her pain when she sings. The songs are brutally honest and include some of her best songs, she has written some of the best lyrics that she ever has in her entire career. This is a must have, its a nice album to listen to when you are feeling down or a little sad. Go out and get it, you will not be disapointed.
Adds to an already great CD June 27, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The two bonus tracks are remixes of Honey. The first one features Da Brat and JD. It is a slower remix, similiar to the one for Thank God I Found You. The other remix is a club mix. It is similiar to Mariah's usual upbeat dance mixes. The two tracks add to the already great CD. This was Mariah's most personal CD until Rainbow came out last year. The CD contains mostly ballads so the two extra remixes make for a more balanced CD. The best tracks are the title cut, Honey and the two remixes, The Roof, Breakdown, The Beautiful Ones, and Close My Eyes. The Cd features Bone and Dru Hill. This is a must for Mariah fans.
