Amazon.com Only after leaving Nashville did Shelby Lynne reinvent herself as a soulful R&B singer. During her Music City days of the early '90s, she gained critical raves that didn't translate into wider success. One reason was this fetching 1993 Nashville-produced album of big-band Western swing, produced by Brent Maher, which appeared long before the words swing revival crossed anyone's lips. It revealed Lynne's assets in a stronger showcase than her earlier Epic recordings. She's radiant and sensual on the torchy "Little Unlucky at Love," but the uninhibited swing tunes, including her explosive performance of the title number, defined the album. She maintained that finger-popping momentum with "Some of That True Love" and "The Rain Might Wash Your Love Away." Lynne turned seductress on "Tell Me I'm Crazy" and honky-tonker on "I Need a Heart to Come Home To," the album's most overtly country number. Now that Lynne's gained wider exposure, it's worth remembering that pushing the envelope is nothing new for her. --Rich Kienzle

Is there such a thing as "country-jazz"?? August 30, 2008 Robert C. Hufford (Hopewell, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I guess so, 'cause I'm listening to this album as I type. From the gorgeous cover photo, and the opening bars of the title cut, we know we're not in for standard country fare. Shelby has long given us genre bending music [not gender bending; that's Katy Peery...Shelby is always definitely a girl], and this 1993 release is but one example. After the opening "Temptation", the next two cuts, "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight", and "Tell Me I'm Crazy" have a more country feel. At the other end, "Come a Little Closer", and "Where Do We Go From Here" have a blues quality. Shelby Lynne is a treasure...her roots are country, but you can in no wise classify her with one word. [True of her kid sister, Allison Moorer, as well]. Look at her cover pictures over the years; very pretty, not pretty at all, and two or three different ways to say "sexy". This MAY be her best...that's opinion anyway, but Shelby's records are just too different one from the other to make it easy. The picture, the music, even the extraneous chatter...all done well. Enjoy.....

I agree that this is THE best she has ever done. My favorite would have to be "Tell Me I'm Crazy". What a voice.
Wonderful Singer / Even Better CD! April 3, 2008 Rosie Vania (Border Of Moscow) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an absolutely wonderful CD by a soulful country singer. She has such a great sound that reaches you when you listen. If you haven't heard her, you should give her a try: two favorite songs of hers: Til a better memory comes along & A Heart to come home to. Wonderful songs.
I'm tempted February 7, 2008 T. Johnson (Portland, OR) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've had this CD for a long time. Shelby has the most beautiful and seductive voice and as always I'm amazed that she's not at the top of the charts. This collection is consistently great, and stylistically different from most of her work. I was listening to it again today years after I got it and voila 5 stars for me.
An Overlooked Singer September 13, 2007 K. J. Bryant 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I don't understand why this woman is not a big star. It is true, she should had never recorded "Love, Shelby" the album she did with Alanis's producer. However, most of her materials are awesome and this is one of them and its great to step back and appreciate this gem of an album. This is the album where Shelby paid tribute to "swing-country" and she does a wonderful job with the materials. This is not an easy style of music, but Shelby has the natural soul and voice to pull these songs off. Shelby's latest albums are great too...more bluesy and folky with a blend of rock and country. Do yourself a favor and collect all her materials.
