DYNAMIC COLLECTION!!!!!! September 13, 2008 Beverly Praiswater 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is no musician who can compare to Leon Russell. He is a singer, a songwriter, an arranger, a musician, a producer, and more. His experiences with other artists in the music industry read like a Who's Who. This collection from 1971 is full of energy. Some of my personal recommendations are Stranger in a Strange Land, Of Thee I Sing, Alcatraz, Beware of Darkness, Sweet Emily, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Home Sweet Oklahoma, and The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen. If you love Leon's work this collection is a must-have. Also if you love Leon, visit his website and get the address for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame to nominate him as an inductee while he is still around to enjoy the glory he so deserves.
Izzy Rock, Blues, Country or other? October 13, 2007 FredD (Jackson TN) I grew up in Memphis. I listened to Booker T, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Elvis, The Big Star and a whole lot of blues. Leon can only be described as a blend of music. Maybe that is his strength/curse, he can't be confined to a specific genre of music. Leon Russell and the Shelter People is music in an art form. The songs are timeless and have living energy with each replay.

This is my favorite studio release of Leon's incredible catalog. I suppose because it has many of the tracks found on the Leon Live release which I rocked out to in my youth. I was introduced to Leon when Asylum II was released. The last vinyl I purchased was Will o' the Wisp. While Leon's later recordings are more polished and better produced. The early 70's found Leon in his element. An icredible song writer, musician and showman extrordinare, it is my opinion that it is Leon that made Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen including Joe who they were/are. Leon is one of those artist's I catagorize as "experience" musicians. Many rock artist coming out of the 60's fall in this category of mine for me. They seem to be as interested/concerned about the experience created from and surrounding there music as the music itself. Other stand out examples within this category are, The Grateful Dead and Hendrix. If your my age, past the half century mark, and remember those days and enjoyed the intensity and character of Leon on his Leon Live recording, buy this CD. It sounds better (I wish somebody would remaster Leon Live) and is little more layed back and easier to keep up with these days.
An Old GEM March 9, 2007 J. Bell (Mississippi Timberland) Buy this and Asylum Choir II and you will have a taste of Make Love Not War Boogie from the mid 60s to the early 70s. Two of my favorite albums back then. They haven't lost a thing over 40+ years.
