Amazon.com essential recording On this, their debut recording for a major label, Canada's quirkiest musical troupe introduced the world to their unique blend of scathing humor, skillful musicianship, and flat-out fun. Packed with songs that have become anthems to their adoring fans, Gordon is practically a collection of Barenaked Ladies' greatest hits. This CD features "Brian Wilson," an homage to the biggest Beach Boy and an exploration of the relationship between art and neurosis; "Be My Yoko Ono," a musician's entreaty to his winsome muse; "Box Set," a relentless indictment of one-hit wonders and washed-up rockers; and the staple sing-along "If I Had $1,000,000," which you can walk around humming all day without getting bored. Literally every song on this disc features the intelligent lyrics, tight arrangements, and astonishing vocalizations that BNL have made their stock-in-trade. It's a winner all the way around. --L.A. My very first Barenaked Lady November 15, 2006 CandynFlowers (Las Vegas, NV USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was the one! This is how I got hooked! And... we've been together ever since. Great cd!
BNL Rocks!! November 10, 2006 J. H. Hannen (New York, New York) Don't let the antics of BNL live fool you...these are seriously talented, intelligent musicians who write, fun, reflective songs that span genres. Tight harmonies, tongue-in-cheek tunes...great studio stuff...but NOTHING compares to the Ladies live...where anything can happen and usually does.
Pop music that doesn't suck June 7, 2006 Untitled (nowhere) There is not a pop band like The Barenaked Ladies. They have musical chops (there's some pretty excellent upright basslines), a smather of musical influences, a toy store full of different instruments (there's a ___load of instruments listed in the personnel section), infectious, sing-along vocals, and a variety of topics, tones, and lyrics. It's not all roses, however. The Flag is too droopy and not enough melancholy for that kind of subject. I don't really find What A Good Boy to be very compelling as it's made out to be. Crazy is a subpar closing, a bit mediocre, but at least it ends well, to hilarious effects. And New Kid On The Block has really bland music, and who the _______ cares about New Kids on The Block? This is the definite Barenaked Ladies album. Regardless of whether or not you despise the band because of their recent hits, christmas albums, and One Week (bleh), Gordon may surprise you. This is the day where they played just for the heck of it ("Go Back to the days of Gordon"). And, of course, it sounds better than ever today, with Hannah Montana and all. 9/10
witty in a million ways October 10, 2005 Chris Maze (runnells iowa) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
i think this is one bare's better efforts, the music is alomst always upbeat and yet they have an uncanny ability to mix and match their lyrics with the events of the world or everyday living, "If I had a million dollars" speaks for itself. The music is very different from mainstream but very good none-the-less

If you like any of the BNL songs you will enjoy this album. I even caught my man humming it round the house and hes way too laid back for this stuff:). BNL are a fun band with catchy rhythms and smart lyrics. They get in your head and wont leave... I played this non stop when I bought it and 5 years later can still play it over and over and over and over. $1,000,000 is still the fave for me, we all dance around to that in our home. Their cynical world view coupled with bouncy beats brings a surprising amount of joy and fun to this album and I reckon you should just go get one!.
