The Crossroads of Blues and Early Rock and RollMay 30, 2006 A. Woodley 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Slim Harpo is the coolest nerd to ever grace this earth. He looks ridged when he plays and has big thick black glasses but is pure cool on the inside. He plays early rock and roll and blues with a strong tremelo to his guitar, which would also be used by Bo Diddly around the same time. What makes Harpo cooler than Bo Diddly are his lyrics. At the time many of Harpo's songs were considered pornographic but this by no means holds true today. Key tracks include "Baby, Scratch My Back" for which he caught a lot of guff and "Shake Your Hips" which the Rolling Stones would later cover on their Exile on Main album. If you have heard the Stones version of that song then you have a good indicator of what Harpo sounds like. This is a great album that is more than worth the money. This is also the strongest collection of his work because it is all here. There are all his singles spanned over two discs.
