Henry Roeland 'Professor Longhair' Byrd is one of the handful of New Orleans music legends above all others, ranked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, and Mahalia Jackson. Like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and others, his greatness did not necessarily translate to hit records and sold-out performances. But, along with Roy Brown and Fats Domino, his spirit helped kick off the reawakening of New Orleans music after World War II, inspiring a host of local admirers, notably Huey Smith, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Dr. John, the Meters, and Domino himself.
