Great album, real funky, kinda pricey per track thoughSeptember 9, 2008 J.R.(Charlotte, NC) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just found out about this album thanks to a great review on WBUR. Really funky/heavy sound. Oh yea, there are some nice open drum breaks on 'Hey Harold' and 'Togo Land' for those that are interested.

I haven't had a chance to hear this album yet. I do want to respond, however, to the other reviewer who stated that Bobby Hutcherson usually plays in a free-jazz/avant-garde style.
I have about three or four of his albums and while some are 'advanced' interpretations of Bebop in the sixties, the free-jazz label doesn't quite stick (because he played on Dolphy's "Out to Lunch?". For those looking for the funkier side of B.H. the San Francisco album is worth checking out. I've seen him live a few times in recent years, and he still has it--lots of it.

Head On is vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's 1971 album that has a different sound than most any other of his other albums. His music normally falls into the free jazz, avant-garde arena, but Head On fits more closely to the Bitches Brew era sound of Miles Davis. It is not a fusion album by design, but it has funk sounding overtones that guide several of the songs. If you like smart, inventive jazz music then Head On is more than worth a listen.
