| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is Scotland's senior regiment and her only regular cavalry. The band members, as well as being trained musicians, are all Army soldiers who crew tanks and have served two tours of duty in Iraq. The album, both Scots and classical tunes, is a tribute to the dedication and talent of this group of military pipers. While they are first and foremost soldiers, the music on Spirit of the Glen is a heart-warming and beautiful demonstration of the incredibly powerful and emotive sound of bagpipe music. Some album highlights: the McCartney popularized #1 single, Mull of Kintyre, Amazing Grace 2007, a reworking of Rod Stewarts `Sailing,' and film themes Dances with Wolves & The Last of the Mohicans.

Second Cd of the Guards I bought during a Visit to Ayr November 26, 2008 David W. Ferree (Baghdad, Iraq) I had heard the Guards many times, of course in more movies then I can count, or can I?, but they are amazing and this was the second one I bought (Auld Lang Syne being the first) and I absolutely was amazed by the breadth and heart in the songs, I as a result have pruchased the dvd to acoompany this cd so I could now watch the Guard perform as well. If you love bagpipes or just want your heart to soar and your feet to start swinging without you then give this a listen.
Perfection October 30, 2008 C. Bart (Springtown, TX USA) Lots of bagpipe music that is on the market is exclusively pipe and drums - not so here. The Guards are backed by an orchestra and are joined by vocals in some of these pieces that make up one of my absolute favorite CDs. I bought this originally wanting to hear the "Last of the Mohicans" theme that I read about through other reviewers. Let me now add my praise to theirs. This theme and the other pieces combine to make a very emotion filled and memorable album. That said, I wouldn't call it music to relax to, but it's an incredible achievement and I'm very happy to have it and look forward to buying more of the Guards music.
I don't know enough to say much but I did like it September 7, 2008 Lilly Flora (Portland, OR) As a person who knows nothing about instrumental music, especially of the Gaelic variety I can only give my general impressions of the CD. It was enjoyable to listen too, fairly relaxing and not irritating. I realize this is not an impressive review but that's really all I have to say. Four stars.
A Craetive Use Of Bagpipe Music July 28, 2008 Timothy Kearney (Hull, MA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Four many people, the common belief about bagpipe music is that the repertoire of bagpipers was somewhat limited to a few well known tunes, particularly "Amazing Grace," "Highland Cathedral," and of course "Scotland the Brave." It's also believed that bagpipe music is best in moderation, and appropriate for a parade and a great touch for a funeral. If you have the same preconceived notions about bagpipes, SPIRIT OF THE GLEN will quickly change your mind. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are joined by a variety of other musicians and present a pleasing collection of music. The collection contains standards such as "Amazing Grace" and "Highland Cathedral," as are other Celtic favorites, but the collection also includes arrangements of film scores and some popular contemporary Celtic songs as well. Overall it is pleasant musical experience and even though there may be quiet a few vocalist and other accompanists, in the end it is the great musicianship of the Royal Scots that make the collection a treasure. Bargaining purists may be disappointed with this collection, believing that the music of the bagpipes is a bit too obscured and perhaps too gimmicky, so if you are looking for pure bagpiping, this may not be the best choice. If you enjoy easy listening music and are looking for something different, you've found it in SPIRIT OF THE GLEN.
A Gem July 3, 2008 Rita (Syracuse, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As I sit listening to this CD I felt propelled to write a review as it envokes so many feelings inside me. ok bagpipes make one cry no doubt but this extra ordinary CD is just that amazing! It has a little of everything. I especially love the 2 pieces from "the Last of the Mohicans" an "Dances With Wolves". To tell you that it gives me chills is an understatement. It is a great buy and I can attest to the fact I am a part time music seller at B&N and when it was on the in store play list we could not keep it on the shelf. So treat yourself as this is a great buy and one you will never tire of..
