Amazon.com's Best of 2001 Director Lasse Hallstrom's recipe for Chocolat is bittersweet, a tale of human hope and frailty imbued with no small amount of symbolism. It's a story that requires a deft, sensitive musical touch, and Hallstrom has wisely turned again to English composer Rachel Portman for the honors. As she did on The Legend of Bagger Vance and her previous, Academy Award-nominated collaboration with Hallstrom, The Cider House Rules, Portman walks the fine line between preciousness and delicacy with grace and dignity. The gypsy flavor of Django Reinhardt's and Stephane Grappelli's "Minor Swing" sets the story's place and time, while Portman's gentle pastoral melodies outline its emotional core, with a few gratifying excursions into more Euro-ethnic music to keep it well-seasoned. The result is another quiet, powerful Portman masterpiece. --Jerry McCulley

Sinfully Delicious May 31, 2008 Amaranth (Northern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rachel Portman's "Chocolat" is an exquisitely delicious soundtrack. It perfectly complements Lasse Hallstrom's sensuous movie about temptation, longing, and love. There's the music of Duke Ellington (it's set in post-WW II France) and Django Reinhardt, the famous Gipsy guitarist. The opening theme is an amazing blend of Gipsy and South American music (panpipes) It evokes the character of Vianne, the beautiful chocolatier, the daughter of a French scientist and a Mayan maiden who healed with cacao. "Chocolat" is an irresistible temptation!
Must have May 14, 2008 Alana Solarus (USA) If you liked the music in this movie you have to have this CD. I should have bought two because I'm sure to wear this one out soon. I can't stop playing it, never tire of hearing the music, and bought another CD by one of the musicians on the "Chocolat" CD. If you haven't heard this music yet, do it!
A visual, aural, sensual, and almost tactile masterpiece! February 24, 2008 Candace Carlson (Cleveland, Ohio) This movie is delicious in every way. I have screened it at least 10 times over the years and it never fails to raise my spirits. The soundtrack alone is enough to make the movie a classic, but it is equalled in excellence by the script, setting and sets, actors, and performances!
