Amazon.com A decade after his tragic, untimely demise, electric-blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan has left behind a void that remains largely unfilled, despite a number of ballyhooed young pretenders. The guitarist's career was long troubled by personal demons, and this album chronicles those deceptively languorous, slow blues jams where Vaughan did battle with them. The howling, fervent tone he coaxed from his instrument was a product of lessons learned only in the School of Hard Knocks, accompanied by a voice--perhaps the most underrated of Vaughan's talents--that perfectly underscored his tortured gospel. But those who stereotyped Vaughan as a paint-by-numbers bluesman misunderstood the breadth of his lexicon; listen to "Chitlins con Carne" (from the guitarist's posthumous The Sky Is Crying album) here and you'll hear tinges of Wes Montgomery and other jazz inflections. Especially notable are three previously unreleased cuts: a live version of "Texas Flood," a 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival duet-jam of "Tin Pan Alley" with the late Johnny Copeland, and an '84 outtake of Elmore James's "The Sky Is Crying"--plus a 15-minute TV-taping workout with Albert King on the elder legend's "Blues at Sunrise." Raw, passionate, and uncompromising, this is SRV at his gut-wrenching best. --Jerry McCulley

Not "one of".... "THE" greatest electric guitarist.... EVER. November 14, 2008 Matrim Caughton (New Holland) I am not an eloquent music critic, and can't make intelligent comparisons to others, so I won't bother naming any of my many "favourites". I love listening to any music which is performed with genuine love and passion. I am a sometime bass player and performer of moderate talent, and so, I listen to music with a musician's ear and heart. Even in Stevie Ray Vaughan's darkest depths of despair, it all fell away when he picked up his guitar and put his mouth to the microphone. Take the time to eliminate all distractions, turn the lights low, put on this cd, turn it up as loud as you dare (without distortion), sit back and get comfortable, close your eyes, and for once, listen with your heart and soul, not just your ears. I sincerely hope you will feel what I feel when I do this, everything from despair and desolation, to utter joy, hope, and belief in the human race as a viable organism. Peerless.
Rare, Blus at sunrise... October 4, 2008 D. Paul (Maryland, USA) One of finest SRV CD's including the title track. Another great guitar player, gone too soon.
Driveing Blues May 26, 2007 Backdoor Man (Sparks Nevada) Great Rocking Blues. Take a Long ride in the Sierra Mountains and it will heal you.
Should be 10 Stars April 12, 2007 R. Barry (Braintree, MA USA) This is absolutely the best compilation of slow-tempo guitar-godlike blues I have ever heard. Every time I open my cabinet to listen to a CD, I cannot keep my hands off this album. If you like the blues and love to be blown away by amazing guitar playing and great songs, buy this album. This album is an abolute GOLD MINE of amazing tunes. It is easily my favorite SRV album. Don't even think about not buying this if you are a blues fan. You will be missing the greatest soulful, **s-kicking music SRV ever played. Treat yourself...buy this album and enjoy!
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ADJUST YOUR STEREO, BUT IT'S NOT SRV'S FAULT!" January 22, 2007 Rick Goldstein (Danville, Ca, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you know me, or have read any of my world famous blue's reviews, you'd have to wonder how I could rate anything by Stevie Ray under a five. Well, it's not SRV's fault or Shaq's. This is a digitally re-recorded CD that is not done well. It is not loud or clear. So to enjoy it, you better turn you stereo way, way up, and make sure when you're done, you turn it back down, or you will have a "FREAKIN" heart attack, when a regularly recorded CD plays. That being said, there is one song that should not be on this CD because it doesn't measure up to the company it's given, and that is #4 "Chitlins Con Carne". The rest are classic Stevie. What made me buy this CD, to add to my SRV collection was the 11-minute plus "Tin Pan Alley". As long as you accept the warning of the poor recording quality, and one song, that could have been replaced by any of 20 other SRV songs, I would say buy it.
